Thought of Saint Augustine
God became a man so that by following a man, which you can do, you will reach God, which you could not do.
It is better to wage war with hope of eternal peace than servitude without hope of liberation.
(De Civ. Dei XXI, 15)
Mary did the will of the Father, and that is why it is greater for her to have been a disciple of Christ than to have been the mother of Christ.

On the Solemnity of our Holy Father St. Augustine, the Delegation of St. Rita, Kenya, celebrated the 25th anniversary of the presence of the Order in this part of Africa. In a beautiful and lively ceremony presided over by the bishop of Ishiara, Most Rev. Paul Karioki, the brothers in communion with the Augustinian contemplative nuns, the 'misioneras' sisters, some other religious and many lay faithful from the four Augustinian parishes expressed their thanksgiving to God for the gift of faith and abundant blessings over the years.

In the nineties, some Irish and Nigerian friars responded generously to the invitation to take up the mission in Kenya; they committed themselves to the spread of the gospel, the service of love among the people, the growth and expansion of the Order in the Church in Kenya.

The Prior General, in his message, read by Fr. Edward Daleng, thanked the Irish Province for their missionary zeal, sacrifice and continuous support to the Kenyan delegation. He encouraged the members of the young Kenyan circumscription to embrace the future with hope, to rise up to the challenges before them and to be faithful in articulating the Augustinian spirit by interpreting the 25 year heritage in a more coherent and realistic way. He says: "I invite you to continue to work to embody the Augustinian charism consistently, both in community life and in the experience of interiority, as well as in the mission in communion with the brothers together as one. In this way, you can continue to announce in the most effective way the Kingdom of God that has become a reality in Jesus Christ."

Six brothers (four Kenyans: Nichodemus Rono, Stephen Nyamwaya, Cyril Mulupi and Matthew Ngimbi and two Congolese: Jacques Bangbasa and Nicolas Takis) made the Solemn Profession of Religious Vows. This brings the number of the indigenous Solemnly Professed Kenyan Augustinians to 25 in 25 years, 7 Simply Professed and 14 postulants. The celebration was a unique occasion of grace as all the other members of the Delegation present renewed their Vows. So also did the Augustinian contemplative nuns and the 'misionera' sisters who attended the occasion.

The Delegation has five communities in Ishiara, South Lands and Baba Dogo-Nairobi, Kisumu and Eldoret where brothers work principally in the pastoral and formation apostolates.

Historically, the Portuguese Augustinians started a missionary venture in the coast of Mombasa toward the end of the 16th century. However, this lasted less than four decades as they were martyred alongside many Christ's followers in the successive century.

The Province of Cebu through the 450 Kaplag Executive Committee celebrated the closing activities of the 450th anniversaries of the rediscovery (kaplag) of the image of the Child Jesus in Cebu and the presence of the Augustinian Order in the Philippines and the 50th year of the Santo Niño Church as a minor basilica. These events were held from April 17 to 30, 2016.

The triduum masses, on April 25-28, at the Santo Niño Pilgrim Center every 5:30pm were presided by Bishop Emilio Bataclan, emeritus auxiliary bishop of Cebu (April 25), Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, chair of the CBCP-Permanent Committee for the Cultural Heritage of the Church (April 26), and Bishop Julito Cortes, bishop of the Diocese of Dumaguete (April 27).

On the feast day, April 28, Fr. Alejandro Moral, O.S.A., Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine, Rome, Italy, celebrated the Mass and delivered his homily. Augustinian priests from the different parts of the country, Diocesan clergy from the Archdiocese of Cebu and other religious priests concelebrated in the triduum masses and the Kaplag Fiesta Mass.

The Philippine festivals in honor of Santo Niño de Cebu highlighted the celebrations after the 5:30 pm feast day mass on April 28.

Also, the unveiling of the commemorative marker and the time capsule was done on April 28, 10am, at the Basilica del Santo Niño de Cebu grounds. The time capsule is suggested to be opened on the year 2065 during the celebration of the 500th Anniversary of Kaplag and the Augustinian Presence in the Philippines, and the 100th Anniversary of the Santo Niño Church as Basilica Minore.

In celebration of the Chicago Province's 75th Anniversary, the friars held a special Diamond Jubilee Remembrance for the late Father Theodore E. Tack, O.S.A. Father Tack, who served as our Prior General from 1971 to 1983, was the first Prior General affiliated to the Chicago Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel.

This tribute video debuted at the Province's fourth annual Augustinian Gala on April 22, 2016, at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. The video was generously sponsored by the Susan & G.T. Bynum Family.

The Augustinian Federation in Spain has sponsored a DVD on the life of Saint Augustine, authored by Agustin Remesal.

This journalist has been a correspondent for Spanish Television in New York, Israel, Rome Paris, etc. and knows Saint Augustine very well. The images of the DVD correspond to the places where Saint Augustine lived.

The script contains many quotes from the Confessions and was put together with the help of many Augustinians.

On 30-31 October at the Royal College University, Maria Cristina, at the Escorial in Spain our Spanish friars celebrated an Assembly, which inaugurated the Federation of the Augustinian Provinces of Spain. Fr. Luis Marin de San Martin, the Assistant General for Southern Europe, presided at the meeting. The Federation has as its goal the renewal of Augustinian religious life in Spain and the creation of one single province in the near future. Currently, there are four provinces in Spain.

The Assembly, which consisted of representatives from the four provinces, elected Fr. Domingo Amigo Gonzalez as President of the Federation and made some minor revisions to the Statutes, along with setting up the criteria for restructuring the presence of the Order and setting up the program for renewal. The Council of the Federation, which will work with the President, has as its members the four current provincials. The assembly also elected as the Federation secretary, Fr. Carlos Alonso Garcia and as the Federation treasurer, Fr. Victor Fernandez Santos.

The General Assembly of the Augustinian Delegation of Kenya has taken place from the 21st to 23rd October 2015. The Assembly commenced with the Holy Eucharist presided over by the Assistant General, Fr. Edward Daleng who represented the Prior General. In his homily, the Assistant General called on all the brothers of the Delegation to live according to the example and teaching of our Holy Father St. Augustine in the continuous search for God through communion for the service of the Church. Self- interest, ambition, cliques and ethnic grouping should be desisted from in order to support the new Delegate Superior and work together for the growth of the Order in Kenya.

At the opening session of the Assembly, the message of the Prior General was read to the hearing of all. In his message, the Prior General appealed to the brothers to rise up to the challenges of leadership and followership now that a Kenyan, Fr. Robert Karanja Ireri, is appointed the Delegate Superior. He thanked the Irish Augustinian Province for their generosity and missionary spirit in setting up an Augustinian presence in this part of Africa. Thus, he reiterated that brothers should live in greater unity in the community: TO LIVE FRATERNITY IN CHARITY. In addition, the Assistant General tasked brothers to promote interiority, reconciliation and accountability as essentials to living genuine community life.

The outgoing Delegate Superior Fr. David FitzGerald handed over the Seal of office as his mandate expired. Subsequently, the Seal was given to the new Delegate Superior Fr. Robert Karanja Ireri. In his speech, the new Delegate Superior thanked the Prior General and his Council for the trust placed on him as the Delegate Superior. He solicits the cooperation of all the brothers of the Delegation; he promises to serve with commitment and to foster unity among brothers for the growth of the Delegation. The Delegation Council, besides the Delegate Superior, is now composed of Councilors: Frs. Augustine Jumah and Joseph Oduor; secretary: Peter Emoit Imatari; and bursar: Julius Ambrose.

In Santiago, Chile, from 21 to 25 September of 2015, the friars of the Province of Chile celebrated their Ordinary Provincial Chapter in the Convento Nuestra Señora de Gracia. At the opening ceremony of the Chapter, the document from the Prior General, Fr. Alejandro Moral Antón, appointing Fr. Patricio Villalba, the Assistant General for Latin America, as the President of the Chapter was read. After having read the names of those who were to take part in the Chapter, the members proceeded to the election of the various officials of the Chapter.

During the opening celebration of the Eucharist, presided over by Fr. Patricio Villalba, the re- election of Fr. Enrique Catalan as Prior Provincial was confirmed. Then, in the following session, the Counselors of the Province as well as the Provincial Secretary and Provincial Treasurer were elected. After the elections, the work of the Chapter continued with the work of reading and voting on the chapters and articles of the new Statutes of the Province. Then these chapters and articles were voted on by the assembly of the friars and the results of the voting was made known and the new Provincial Statutes were confirmed by the assembly.

On 28 August 2015, the feast of St Augustine, the Dutch Province launched a new book about its 120 years of history between 1886 and 2006.

The book is written in Dutch and is named 'Een kleine orde met allure. De augustijnen in Nederland, 1886-2006' ('A small order with a presence. The Augustinians in the Netherlands, 1886-2006'). In offering a full historical analysis, it has 512 pages and almost 100 illustrations, graphs and tables.

In this book, the author, Dr Brian Heffernan, tells the story of the Dutch Augustinians. At the end of the nineteenth century they consisted of a handful of parish ministers. During the twentieth century, their involvement in secondary education gave them a certain prestige in Dutch Catholic society. The impact on the Province of its expansion into missionary activity in South America and Papua (Indonesia) is included.

During the 120 years in question the Augustinians in the Netherlands were a small order with a presence. They were parish ministers and campaigners for the cause of Catholicism and religious life in the Netherlands. In the 1960s they regarded themselves as bearers of renewal, and today mostly as promoters of the spirituality of Augustine. These changing and often conflicting narratives provide a framework for the story, in which the constant reinvention of Augustinian identity holds centre stage.

The launch of the book took place in the Mariënhage priory in Eindhoven and was marked by a symposium on the history of the Dutch Province. Some 150 people attended and Professor Paul van Geest, Father Paul Clement (Provincial) and the author Brian Heffernan spoke.

The author, Brian Heffernan, is an academic researcher and a scholar of the history of the Order. The book has ISBN 978-90-8704-523-4 and costs EUR 49. It can be obtained directly from the publisher at www.verloren.nl or via bestel@verloren.nl.
