A new discovery of an old work of art.
Art experts have determined that a painting of Saint Augustine recently found in a private collection in Britain is actually a work of the famous artist Caravaggio. The painting is a rediscovery from the collection of the artist’s patrons, Cardinal Benedetto Giustiniani and his brother Marchese Vincenzo. A label tucked in the back of the stretcher revealed the name of the heir to the collection in the nineteenth century.
The painting has been requested for the exhibition Roma al tempo di Caravaggio at Palazzo Venezia, Rome, from November 10, 2011 to February 5, 2012.
