The Acts of the Intermediate Chapter of the provinces of Ireland, Castile and the Ordinary Provincial Chapter of Germany were discussed and approved.
Intermediate General Chapter
The intermediate General Chapter will be held in Abuja, Nigeria September 18-30, 2016.
Discussion and decisions were made regarding various dispensations, changes and requests of Friars. Renunciations and nominations for membership to various commissions were also approved.
Foundation: Augustinians across the world
Maurizio Misitano shared with the Administrative Council of the Foundation the new brochures and flyers which will be used to promote and introduce the work of the Foundation as a means of acquiring funds to assist in projects of the Order. Residenza Paolo VI and the stores who rent space from the Order will also be involved in the distribution of the information regarding the new Foundation.
The Prior General and each Assistant General presented a summary of the work of the international commissions and also a summary of various chapters, assemblies and visits.
Alejandro Moral informed the Council of his visits in India, Japan, Poland, USA, Spain, Peru. He updated the Council on the dismissal from the Order of 9 Friars in Brazil.
John Flynn discussed the initial plans for a meeting for all New Secretaries of the Order which is planned for January 16-20, 2017 in Rome.
Franz Klein discussed with the Council the work of the Secretariat for Social Communication which will conduct an International Encounter in Spain for Communication personnel in June, 2016. Franz also provided an update of what will become the new publication format of OSA Int. The book will be published at the end of the 2015 calendar year. The theme of the publication will be Justice and Peace. Franz updated the council on his visits to the Czech Republic, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, England and Poland.
Anthony Banks discussed the tasks of the Finance Commission and the initial results from the survey that was sent to every circumscription. He also presented the work of the Economic Ad Intra committee regarding regulating the work of our lay employees in the Collegio, the Patristic Institute and the Curia. Tony also gave a summary of his visits to India, Vietnam, Australia and the Philippines. Work continues to move forward on the work of the Common Novitiate in Cebu and also the Formation house in Vietnam. Tony also updated the council on the Vocations Directors conference that will be in the Philippines in November, 2015.
Patricio Villalba updated the Council (via email) on his visits and meetings in Mexico, Peru, Panama, Ecuador, and Colombia. The project of the common novitiate in Lima, Peru continues to go well. There will be a similar collaboration for a novitiate in Panama which will include the circumscriptions of Antilles, Central America, Venezuela and Panama. There is a currently a study regarding a common project of Augustinian Studies in Latin America in collaboration with Unicervantina in Colombia. There was a planning meeting for a Latin American Meeting of Augustinian Lay Fraternities which is planned for October 2016 in Bogata. In May, 2016 the Vicariate of Panama will celebrate its 50th anniversary.
Luis Marin presented the work of the Institute of Augustinian Spirituality. He updated the council on his visits to Peru, Spain and Italy. In June there was a celebration at the Escorial for the Year of Consecrated Life. In Guadarrama there was a meeting dedicated to Permanent Formation. Luis updated the council on the progress of the Federation of the four provinces in Spain which will be formalized in October 2015. Luis reminded the council on the urgent need in every circumscription to prepare formators who can guide our men in each level of our formation houses throughout the Order.
Edward Daleng updated the council on the work of the Commission for Youth and the International gathering which will take place from July 19-25, 2016 in the Czech Republic. The International World Youth Day will take place 25-31 July, 2016 in Krakovia, Poland. Edward also updated the Council on various communities in the circumscriptions in Africa, especially his visit to Maiduguri. The next meeting of the Commission for Evangelization and Pastoral Ministry will be 8-9 October, 2015 in Rome.
Joseph Farrell presented a summary of the chapter of the Province of St. Augustine in California (USA). In August, the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova and the Province of Our Mother of Good Council had respective celebrations in the Provinces for the Year of Consecrated Life. The Commission for Initial Formation is preparing a workshop for formators in the OALA region in São Paulo, Brazil, November 17, 18, 19, 2015. This workshop will be organized in collaboration with the Institute of Augustinian Spirituality. The theme of the workshop is “Accompaniment in Augustinian Initial Formation.” The work of the Ratio Institutionis continues to be prepared for the Intermediate General Chapter in September 2016. The commission on Education is preparing for its next meeting with the directors of our Augustinian Schools of Higher Education. (Universities) in November/December 2015.
The Economo General reviewed with the General Council an unanticipated expense with regard to a faulty meter reading of the electricity that was consumed by the buildings at the Via Paolo VI, 25 address. This unexpected bill will have an impact on the budget for the next few years. He will continue to keep the council updated. The council also discussed with the Economo General the situation with our current Health Insurance plan. The economo general is currently studying the situation and reviewing other options and policies.
The Year of Consecrated Life, 30 November 2014- 2 February 2016, is an opportunity for the Order and for the individual circumscriptions to celebrate our vocations as religious called to Consecrated Life. The Holy See organized a week of encounters September 14 – 19, 2015 for young religious. 19 Augustinian Friars from 11 Circumscriptions participated in the gathering. The reunion of our Augustinian Contemplative Nuns will take place in Cascia, Italy October 5-9, 2015. A reunion of our Augustinian Bishops will be held in Rome February 1-3, 2016.
The communities in Cuba, Annaba, San Gimignano, Papal Sacristy, and Collegio Santa Monica were all discussed regarding changes and additions in those communities.
The Prior General and Assistants worked on developing the calendar of canonical visitations, chapters, assemblies and international congresses.
The Prior General discussed with the Council a letter which he wishes to send regarding the response of the Augustinians to the refugee crisis in Europe and in the world.
