On 10 May 2014 at 5:00 pm the episcopal ordination of our Augustinian brother, José Demetrio Jiménez Sánchez-Mariscal, as Bishop of the Prelature of Cafayate, Argentina took place. Participating in the ceremony were the Papal Nuncio, Emil Paul, Cardinal Karlic, three Augustinian bishops (Mariano Moreno, the principal celebrant, Alberto Bochatey, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of La Plata, and Cipriano García, the bishop–emeritus). Besides the large number of other archbishops and bishops, there were also participating the Prior General, P. Alejandro Moral, the Assistant General, P. Patricio Villalba, the Prior Provincial, P. Agustín Alcalde, the Vicar Superior, P. Nicanor Juarez, as well as numerous Augustinians of the Vicariate of Argentina-Uraguay, of the Province of Spain, and many others who came from Rome, Brazil, Bolivia and many other places. Almost 6,000 faithful filled the place where the ordination was celebrated. Among the faithful were relatives and friends of P. Jose Demetrio, including his father, two sisters, one brother, and many religious sisters of the congregation, Agustinas Misioneras, who have worked side by side with P. José Demetrio. There were also many diocesan priests of the Prelature and from other places, who participated in the ceremony.
The ceremony was marked by great joy and reverent silence, by enthusiastic music and the participation of old and young who showed their great love for the Augustinians, who work in that area, and especially for their new bishop.
At the end of the celebration the Prior General thanked all for being present and participating. He especially thanked his brother Augustinians and spoke about the need for vocations for the service of the Church.
The new bishop also spoke at the conclusion of the liturgy and offered thanks to all and for the many blessings that all were to him in his life of service to the Church and to the Prelature. He noted also the need for work with the poor and with those on the margins of society. He thanked everyone, both present and absent, for all the joy he had experienced in his years of service there.
P. Alejandro Moral, OSA, Prior General
