From Tuesday May 6th to Thursday 8th, the Organisation of Augustinians of Europe (OAE) gathered in Dublin to explore the topic, "Immigration and Migration. The European Experience."
With the help and presence of experts, both Augustinian and lay, the immigrant voice itself and the Irish Immigrant Council, they shared their own experiences and attempted to discern how Augustinians throughout Europe might better understand and respond to this issue in their own location.
With the Irish Province hosting this event they welcomed their brothers from as far south as Malta, from Italy and Spain, from Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany, from Belgium and Holland and, of course, their nearest neighbours, England and Scotland.
With colleages working overseas missions in countries like Nigeria, the Congo, Kenya, Ecuador, Papua New Guinea, Peru,to name but a few, the conversation strayed far beyond the experience of migration in Europe alone.
The brothers listened and learned, discussed and debated but they also socialised together and availed of the Irish hospitality! A very informative visit to an ancient Irish burial site, a concelebrated Mass with the Archbishop of Dublin, a Mass to celebrate new affiliates to the Order in Drogheda and a visit to the Augustinian Retreat House in Orlagh were also highlights of the stay.
At the end the Provincial, Fr. John Hennebry OSA handed the baton to Malta where next year's gathering will take place. The wonderful secretariat Fr. Aldo Bazan, Fr. José Maria Herranz Maté and Fr. Noel Hession will now set their sights on this larger gathering which involves Provincials with delegates from the Province as well.
