"Anima una et cor unum in Deum!" (Regula)

Thought of Saint Augustine
Past and present I find in all movement of things; but it is not so in the Truth that remains forever; I only find the present in her, and this is incorruptible; this cannot be said of creatures.
(In Io. Ev. XXXVIII, 10)
I shall know you, you who know me. Virtue of my soul, go deep into it and make it fit for you, so that you may have it and possess it, without stain or wrinkle.
I realize what I am and praise you for it. Come to my aid, that I may not stray from the way of salvation.
(Sermo 67, 9)

Chulucanas, 25th Anniverary

Chulucanas, Peru
25th Anniversary of the Vicariate.

Under the theme, "We Augustinians celebrate 25 years of communion in prayer and mission" the Vicariate of Chulucanas, Peru, marked its silver anniversary with great festivity and solemnity during the first week of September. While events of the jubilee were held throughout the year, the principal celebrations brought together members of the Vicariate and friars from abroad during the early days of the month, beginning with a retreat led by Fr. Alex Lam OSA, Prior Provincial of the Peruvian Province. This was followed on September 9 by a gathering of the friars at the parish of San José Obrero in Chulucanas and a pilgrimage to the local cemetery, where Fr. Eleodoro Villanueva OSA presented a brief history of the Vicariate and invited all to remember the deceased friars who had served in the Vicariate over the years.

The following day's celebrations took place in Morropón. There Fr. Isaías Jiménez Cruz OSA, the first Peruvian vocation to the Vicariate, was feted. During the Eucharist, Prior General Fr. Robert Prevost OSA, urged the friars not to lose the missionary spirit which had given the Vicariate birth and which is still needed in today's world. The following day a Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated by Bishop Daniel Turley OSA in the cathedral of Chulucanas, during which he and Fr. Richard Palmer OSA, while commemorating the 50th anniversary of their religious profession, wished also to express his gratitude to God for the presence of the Augustinians in the diocese.

The liturgical celebrations were surrounded in each location with expressions of appreciation by the faithful, including traditional dances and entertainment, words of gratitude and the breaking of bread. Special guests during the festivities were the former, and founding, bishop of Chulucanas, Monsignor John McNabb OSA, the Priors Provincial of Chicago and Villanova, as well as the Prior General, and the mission procurators of the Chicago and Villanova Provinces. At the conclusion of the luncheon offered by Bishop Turley following the Mass of Thanksgiving, the present superior of the Vicariate, Fr. Fidel Alvarado Sandoval OSA, read a letter of congratulations from the friars of Annaba, Algeria, thanking the Vicariate for the presence of one of its members, Fr. José Manuel Vizcarra OSA, in Annaba, as a sign of its continuing missionary spirit.
