The first meeting of the new International Commission for Evangelisation and Pastoral ministry took place in April 2014 in Rome. The Commission was set up on the request of the last Ordinary General Chapter 2013. The members present at the meeting reflected on the pastoral realities of their respective circumscriptions and around the Order and also the challenges posed by the present society. How can we Augustinians respond urgently to the invitation of Pope Francis to evangelise effectively in the Church as authentic witness of Joyful message in the world of today?
The participating members dedicated substantial time to define the nature of the commission and its functions which primarily are: to assist the Order to identify where Augustinian spirituality permeates our present ministries and where it may be better developed to enhance the Gospel message; and to promote renewed pastoral ministry more attentive to the current challenges of each place and more focused on the work of evangelization which stimulates a renewal of liturgical and sacramental life in our ecclesial communities.
A programme of the Commission has been sketched out and it will be presented to the Major Superiors during their forthcoming gathering of June 2014 in Rome.
The Commission is due to meet again later during the year.
