The General Council of the Order met in plenary session during the period November 4 - 17, 2012, and treated the following items:
Friars nominated as officers of the Augustinian Historical Institute were confirmed: President - Fr. Jesús Álvarez; Secretary - Fr. Luis Marín; Counselor - Fr. Pietro Bellini.
Fr. Martin Micallef (MEL) was elected Assistant General to fill the place formerly held by Fr. Luciano De Michieli who had been elected Prior Provincial of the Italian Province.
Dispensations from simple vows were granted to two friars of the Province of Colombia and one of the Province of Spain.
The resignation of Fr. Jan Biernat as econome of the Polish Province was accepted and the nomination of Br. Jan Michal Legocki to fill that office was approved.
Approval was given to the 2012-2013 budget submitted by the Delegation of Kenya.
Approval was given to the 2012-2013 budget of the International House of Studies in Nairobi.
Approval was given to the Procurator General to forward three requests to the Congregation of the Clergy for dispensations from the clerical state.
Discussion took place on the 3-month 2013 Course on Augustinian Spirituality in Italian. The decision was made to reduce the course this coming year to one month's duration and to adapt it to the interests of Augustinian Contemplative Nuns. The course will continue to be open to the participation of Italian speaking friars.
Approval was given to the End of the Year Report (2011-2012) presented by the Econome General, and two expenditures were approved for capital improvements on the Curia building and Generalate property.
A donation was approved for improvements on the school in the diocese of Kano, Nigeria.
Fr. Jolly Enamavungal Albert was approved as econome of the community in Annaba.
Discussion was held on several topics: the new commission established in preparation for the 2013 General Chapter; the initiative of the four provinces of Spain studying the possibility of unification; the situation of the province of Holland.
The reports of the Prior General and Assistants General are summarized as follows:
Fr. Robert Prevost informed the Council of his participation in the Congress on the City of God that was held at the Patristic Institute in September. He reported also on the Assembly of Contemplative Nuns held in Guadarrama, Spain, and on his experience of the Synod on the New Evangelization, of which he was a member.
Fr. Alejandro Moral, reported on preparations for the 2013 Spirituality Course to be held in Rome for Italian speaking friars and sisters. He also updated the Council on activities of the Commissions for which he is responsible: the Secretariat for Justice and Peace, the Commissions for Laity and the Institute of Spirituality. In December he will conduct a visitation of the Province of Madrid.
Fr. Miguel Angel Keller spoke of activities in Cuba, where our friars have now moved to the Church of El Cristo de Buen Viaje, and also spoke of the possibility of candidates for the Order there. He reported on new initiatives of OALA in Panama, and the results of a questionnaire distributed in Latin America on behalf of the Commission for Initial Formation.
Fr. Rommel Par gave an updated reported on preparations for the Augustinian Youth Encounter to be held in Sao Paulo in 2013 and Augustinian participation in World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro.
Fr. Franz Klein reported on a meeting of representatives of the four circumscriptions of Poland, Slovakia, Prague and Brno and initiatives taken toward greater collaboration on their part. He also attended the mid-Chapter Assembly of the Province of Holland, the meeting of UAFA (Union of the Augustinian Friars of Africa), and a meeting concerning the International House, both of these in Nairobi. Finally he made a visitation of all the communities in Tanzania.
Fr. Michael Di Gregorio reported on the recent meeting of the Commission on Initial Formation and the progress of its work on a supplement to the Order's Plan of Formation.
On November 9 & 10, the General Council met in several sessions with members of the Commission established to help prepare for the 2013 General Chapter. The Commission itself met to continue its deliberations and offered specific recommendations to the Council which have been communicated to the Order through a letter of the Prior General of November 13, 2012.
On November 12 & 13, the General Council met with several newly elected Major Superiors: Fr. Alfons Tony (GER), John Abubakar (NIG), Patricio Villalba (QUI), and Luciano De Michieli (ITA), to acquaint them with the members and the work of the General Curia, to discuss the state of their respective provinces and to assist them in their roles as major superiors.
