On February 8, 2012, Msgr. Prospero Grech, O.S.A., Cardinal-designate and Titular Archbishop of San Leone, was ordained to the episcopate at St. John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta, Malta. The principal ordaining bishop was Msgr. Paul Cremona, O.P., Archbishop of Malta. Msgr. Giuseppe Versaldi, Cardinal-designate and Bishop Emeritus of Alessandria and President of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See, and Msgr. Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo, were co-consecrators.
Also present as concelebrants of the Mass were the Apostolic Nuncio of Malta, Msgr. Tommaso Caputo, the Prior General of the Order, Very Rev. Robert F. Prevost, O.S.A., and some members of the General Council, the Prior Provincial of Malta, Rev. Fr. Emanuel Bonello Borg, O.S.A., and his Council, friars of Collegio Sta. Monica in Rome and of the Province of Malta, as well as some bishops and many diocesan priests. The President of Malta, H. E. George Abela was likewise present as well as the Prime Minister of Malta, Hon. Lawrence Gonzi.
Msgr. Prospero Grech will receive the red hat on the 18th of February 2012 during the ordinary Consistory of Cardinals in Vatican City. He will become the second Maltese Cardinal and the first Augustinian Cardinal in over a century.
