The Augustinian Federation of Africa (AFA) organised from February 2nd to 6th, 2015 a conference for friars and nuns in Cotonou, Benin Republic. The conference has as a topic of reflection "Rediscovering the Augustinian Identity". During the opening session, the Prior General, Fr. Alejandro Moral Antón expressed his joy to participate at this occasion where various Augustinian religious men and women are united as a family to share their life experience and challenges. He spoke on the necessity for us Augustinians to turn within for a proper understanding of who we are and to reflect on Church which we are part of and are called to serve. The Church grows not through proselytism but by authentic witness. In this light, the Prior General outlined four basic pillars on which our identity is built: Interiority, Communion, Poverty and Service of the Church.

Speakers at the conference also expounded on the importance of unity, collaboration and challenges of witnessing in the African continent. Augustinian friars and nuns came from Annaba, Bennin Republic, Congo, Kenya, Nigeria and Togo.

Prayers were offered and solidarity was shown to the Augustinian Sisters of Mercy whose convent, compound and clinic in Shuwa have been taken over by the Islamic terrorist group, Boko Haram and serve as their base. Augustinian friars are still present in Maiduguri witnessing in a difficult situation. The Prior General appeals to all members of the Order to remember the Augustinians and all those who are suffering in that part of Nigeria.
