The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has authorized the Congregation for the Cause of the Saints to publish the decree regarding the heroic virtue of Br. Sebastián Elorza Arizmenedi OSA (1882-1942).

Thursday, April 3, Pope Francis received in audience the Prefect of the Congregation for the Cause of the Saints. Among the many cases on which the Holy Father gave his approval was the Augustinian Br. Sebastián Elorza Arizmendi OSA.

With this approval, the Church offers the Church the life of Br. Elorza to the people of God, calling him “Venerable” giving testimony that our brother lived the theological and cardinal virtues as well as the evangelical counsels in an heroic way.

The diocesan investigation began in Burgos between 1968 and 1971. The decree of validity was sent to the Congregation for the Cause of the Saints on October 11, 1991 and the Positio super vita et virtibus was given in 1997.

Br. Elorza lived practically his whole Augustinian life in the monastery of S. Maria de LaVid, living in simplicity and serving mostly as the porter of the convent, lovingly serving his brothers and the pilgrims who visited the Marian Sanctuary. Having lived a life of daily consecration to God through love of neighbor, as is prescribed in the Rule, Br. Sebastián passed from his earthly to eternal life after a brief and sudden illness in the fall of 1942. He lived this sickness with much faith and hope, preparing himself to meet the Lord. The popular recognition of his holiness never faded with the passing of time. Br. Elorza is another example of holiness which comes from performing daily activities heroically.
