The bishop of Alcalá annually celebrates Eucharist in the cemetery of Paracuellos de Jarama, where seventy Augustinian religious were martyred during the religious persecution in Spain in 1931, escalating in 1936 with the civil war.

This year, 2013, at the Mass, three Augustinian provincials and a number of Augustinians and members of other religious orders joined the celebration for the Bishop’s blessing of the funeral monument erected by the province in honor of the Augustinians buried in the cemetery.

Of the seventy brothers buried in the graves of Paracuellos, sixty-three were beatified in 2007 as part of the cause of the beatification of the 98 Augustinian Martyrs of Spain.

In the group of Blesseds of Paracuellos, is the Provincial at the time, Blessed Avelino Rodriguez, several culturally prominent religious, such as Blessed Julián Zarco, professor of history, other academicians, and university professors from Maria Cristina of the Escorial, three former priors of the Royal Monastery and men of great social awareness, such as Blessed Gerardo Gil who promoted important initiatives in support of workers. Students of theology, many of them of a young age were also part of this group of martyrs. For those who contemplate their testimony and invoke their protection, these witnesses of faith, covering diverse facets, activities, and ages, offer the possibility of encouragement in whatever personal circumstance one may encounter.

This year’s Eucharistic, was celebrated on the feast of Christ the King, at the closing of the Year of Faith in the diocese of Alcalá. The bishop described the cemetery of Paracuellos as the “Cathedral of the Martyrs.” There is no place in Spain where more Blesseds are buried. Already there are 134 Blesseds from various Orders buried there.
