On the occasion of Pope Francis' visit to the Basilica of Sant'Agostino on August 28th to celebrate the opening Mass of the Order's General Chapter, then Prior General Robert Prevost wished to offer the Holy Father a special gift in commemoration of the historic event.

When, a month earlier, it had been announced that the pope might accept the Order's invitation to celebrate the Mass, Fr. Richard Cannuli, a member of the Villanova Province, and chairman of the Arts Department at Villanova University, offered to write an icon to present to Pope Francis. Fr. Prevost agreed, the icon was written, brought to Rome by one of the delegates to the Chapter, and presented following the Mass, as the pope sat among the friars for a commemorative photo. The icon is of Saint Augustine, and inscribed on the reverse side are words of dedication under the banner "AMDG", which is the abbreviation of the Jesuit motto, "Ad majorem Dei gloriam".
