Today, December 4, 2012, it was announced that our brother, Fr. Alberto Bochatey Chaneton, of the Vicariate of Argentina, has been named by Pope Benedict XVI as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of La Plata in Argentina.
Fr. Alberto Bochatey Chaneton was born on July 23, 1955, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He joined the Order after having studied at the Colegio San Agustín in the same city where he was born. He entered the novitiate in Argentina on September 11, 1974 and made his first profession on September 12, 1975. After studying philosophy in La Vid, Spain, he was sent to Rome for his theological studies, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in sacred theology (STB) at the Augustinianum. He made his solemn profession on December 21, 1989, and was ordained to the priesthood in Buenos Aires on April 24, 1981.
Fr. Alberto continued his studies in Rome, and was granted a licentiate in moral theology at the Accademia Alfonsiana and then an M.A. in Bioethics from the Istituto di Bioetica, of the Catholic University Sacro Cuore (Gemelli) in Rome and from the John Paul II Institute of the Lateran University in Rome. Presently, he is a doctoral candidate at the Alfonsianum in Rome. He has also done advanced study in bioethics at the Center for Clinical Bioethics at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., U.S.A.
Fr. Bochatey has served in the following places: Rosario, Argentina (1980-1982); Buenos Aires, Argentina (1982-1986; 1997 – 2010); Mendoza, Argentina (1989 – 1995); with time spent in Rome as he pursued graduate studies (1986 – 1988; 1995 – 1997). Since June of 2010, he has been the prior of the community at the International College of St. Monica in Rome. His academic specialization has led him to dedicate significant time to lecturing in the area of Moral Theology, and especially in Bioethics, marriage and the family, having been director of the Institute of Bioethics of the Faculty of Medicine at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina (2001 – 2010), where he was professor and also editor of the professional review Vida y ética.
Fr. Bochatey is a corresponding member of the Pontifical Academy for Life, and an Academic in the Argentinian Academy for Ethics in Medicine. He is also a member of the Academic Council for Ethics in Medicine at the National Academy for Medicine, in Argentina. In addition, he has participated in numerous congresses and in other academic activities in the area of bioethics, both in Argentina and in other countries as well.
